OFFICE FOR FIRST INTENTIONS

Metronome Press: Office For First Intentions

Since May 2006, Metronome Press has extended its activities from a publishing house to an Office For First Intentions based at 65 rue Rébeval, Paris, Belleville, 75019, France. Conceived on the model of a halfway house or maison de passe, it functions as an intermediary space between the private environment of the studio or office and the public site of the museum, gallery, or cinema. The Office For First Intentions proposes a shelter for initiatives, built by a family of artists, sociologists, film-makers, architects, critics, and curators who aspire to an economy of production outside of the normal institution. Metronome Press is interested in generating a certain condition in which the specific research-in-motion of different conceptual engineers can be shared and debated.

The Office For First Intentions promotes the definition of a common space based upon elective affinities and unexpected encounters. At its premises in the rue Rébeval in Paris, Metronome Press is currently organising a series of dialogues between artists and researchers that take place behind closed doors. During these sessions, an artist or researcher is invited to present a new work that is still in the making. For example, the first edit of a film, plans for the construction of an object, the scenario of an action or film, the premises for a conceptual elaboration or collaborative production. This first intention is questioned through the choreography of a particular dialogue proposed by members of Metronome Press. Sessions last for two hours and are open by invitation and recommendation only. The members involved in these sessions are Clémentine Deliss, Thomas Boutoux and the sociologist and writer, Boris Gobille. However, this membership can expand in order to achieve the necessary conditions for the analysis of a specific first intention. Multiple perspectives are encouraged, especially those that may diverge from disciplinary orthodoxies.
